An interesting parallel emerged over the recent assassination attempt of Donald Trump. 80 years ago this week (July 20 1944) there was an assassination attempt made against Adolf Hitler. A bomb. A bomb that four people and devastated its surroundings so thoroughly that the would-be assassin was confident Hitler never could have survived the hit. But he as wrong. Hitler survived. The only injury was to his...um...EARdrums.
Sound familiar yet?
It was a miracle Hitler survived the bombing. And it was. Everyone thought the same thing: He should have been dead. And so he thought God saved him so he could save Germany, because Hitler was special like that, you know. Just ask him. Or Trump.
Sound familiar yet?
The idea of carrying out God's will on Earth was nothing new to the nazi regime. Gott Mit Uns (God With Us) was emblazoned upon each Nazi soldier's belt buckle. And Hitler thought he had a special anointing from God to exterminate the Jews.
What am I trying to get at? I believe in miracles. I do, I really, really do. But I don't believe God saved Hitler just so he could gas 6 million Jews. And I don't believe God directed a bullet meant for Trump, into the body of a retired fireman. In fact, I think it's pretty sick to attribute both to a loving and merciful God.
Just sayin'.
